This book presents the first edition and translation of Ólafur Sveinsson's treatise on elves that makes its text accessible in the way how it was laid out by Ólafur himself. The text is accompanied by an analysis of its social, literary, and economic context that shows the rich contributions which Ólafur’s unique testimony can make to our understanding of the workings of pre-industrial folk belief in a sparsely settled North Atlantic landscape.

The challenging point in understanding violence is that it is not always clear what counts as violence.

Nijolė Laurinkienė's "The God Perkūnas of the Ancient Lithuanians" is the most thorough and extensive work on the Lithuanian thunder god to date. This book’s nineteen chapters follow the god’s Indo-European origins through the evidence in histories, place names, and diverse forms of folklore, as well as how these relate to archaeological evidence and aspects of material culture.
